The morning included a tour to Melk Abbey. This has been a working Benedictine monastery since 1089.
We started by checking the gardens where a resident artist had added “exotic animals” and painted the ceilings and walls of the various rooms in the building.
Afterwards we had an official tour of the Abbey. Limited photographs allowed inside but Danny did manage to get some. Photos outside at the beginning and once we reached the parapet at the top show the incredible views as the Abbey sits on a hill above the town.
The ship then sailed to Durnstein and we had free time to disembark and explore on our own. A really pretty little town.
One thing Durnstein produces is “Rabbit shit” which is actually just apricot pieces covered in chocolate. We didn’t actually buy any of it but we did get Apricot “kernels” coated in dark chocolate. Brought them home to eat at a later.
