Day 13 – Fri, 5 Oct 2018 – Henschke, Taylors & Clare

Again, our day started with breakfast at the Novatel. The omelette was as large as the plate!

Once we checked out our first stop for the day was at Henschke Wines. They are a world-renowned family winery, 150 years old, that produces some of the best reds in the country. “Hill Of Grace” 2012 Shiraz was named “Best Shiraz and Wine of the Year” by Hallidays in 2017. Although we can’t afford the Hill of Grace bottles (anywhere between $600-$800 per bottle) Danny has discovered their “Henry’s Seven”, a blend of 4 varieties, including Shiraz, that is really easy drinking and reasonably priced. They also produce a couple of Rieslings and, unbeknownst to me, a Sauvignon Blanc that is quite nice as well. This was the first place we chose to have some bottles shipped home.

We then started our drive over to the town of Clare, in the Clare Valley region. As with the Barossa, Clare Valley is actually a grouping of towns that starts about 100km from Adelaide. It runs from Auburn (south) to Clare (north) for a distance of approximately 25km.

Lunch was at Angaston where we managed to get more pictures of old buildings.

On the way into the Clare Valley we paid a quick visit to Taylors Wines. This is another family owned winery and sits on a hill just above Auburn. The view from the carpark is delightful.

Our accommodation for the next two nights is at The Clare Valley Motel. Our room was lovely. Dinner consisted of canapes in the “upstairs lounge” and a free glass of wine. Kent was the musical entertainment for the evening.

After the long day yesterday we decided to turn in early.
