At the beginning of the day, Danny wandered outside to take some photos of our early morning visitor as well as some of the flowers around our cabin.
The main event for the day was to be the Cape Borda Lighthouse. The drive is from Kingscote to the end of the Island – over an hour away. It’s close to 100km but the last 30km is dirt road so it makes for some slow going.
On the way there we pulled in at Harveys Return and Scott Cove. At Harveys Return there’s a walkway down to the beach (where supplies used to be dropped off and brought into the Lighthouse) but getting back up was going to be way too steep to consider, especially given the timeframe and the fitness level of a couple of the men. So we had a brief foray into the bush and then moved on to the Lighthouse Keepers cemetery nearby.
We then stopped at Scott Cove. There’s no beach here but the view is stunning and worth the delay.
On to Cape Borda Lighthouse – “the only REEEAAAALLL lighthouse in South Australia” according to our guide, Mick. It is also the only square stone lighthouse, and the third oldest lighthouse still standing, in South Australia. The tour is well worth the money and our guide was a hoot! Included in the tour was the firing of the cannon (only once a day, so pick your time!). After the tour and cannon firing we had lunch in the picnic area nearby (took the food with us) and then headed back to Kingscote.
We made two stops on the way back – Parndana IGA (bakery, grocery store, bank, internet café & library all rolled into one!) for afternoon tea and the Island Beehive again for Barb to pick up some last minute souvenirs and for me (Tracey) to eat some honey ice-cream. We then made another trip to the beach near Kingscote (part of the Bay of Shoals) to get photos of pelicans.
Dinner that night was at the Bella Café & Pizza Bar – great food and very accommodating especially since there was little else open on the public holiday and they were jam packed. The staff were incredibly busy but made us feel really welcome and sorted out a table for us without batting an eyelid.
